In the 1990s, I became interested in transforming things tangentially associated with
art----namely copies of antiquities back into fine art. At the time, museum stores were sprouting up everywhere. Exhibitions, as they are today, were designed to funnel enthralled visitors directly into kiosks selling home- and office-sized versions of what they had just seen. And to some, a cast marble portrait bus of Thalia, Muse of Comedy made from the second-century Roman original and sold at the Met for $425.00 (non-members' price) is art, except that it isn't.
My sculptures start with similar replications of images, long ago liberated from their intended uses in ritual worship, as tributes or funeral decoration, and robbed of any rationality provided by their original architectural context. By recasting them using traditional materials (plaster, wax), and combining them with tropes of modern sculpture: found objects, repetition and industrial materials, the result is a re-presentation that straddles two worlds, leading the replicas out of their inherent banality.
As with the two-dimensional copies of classical painting and sculpture, such as prints and postcards, my paintings contrast the ephemeral nature of image reproduction and the ease with which it can be done with physical objects. The interplay between the photocopies, stencils, transparencies and the materiality of paint, metal oxides and collage elements, forms a means by which to analyze and examine painting conventions such as portraiture and landscape.
